The story of Idle Fancies starts amid a worldwide pandemic.

 

In 2020, founder and owner, Stephanie Offutt, was laid off from her full-time job of creative manager and design lead at a large corporation where she had worked for years. She wasn't alone. Many people were being laid off at this time. Thinking her time as an unemployed member of society wouldn't last long, she continued to look for work in her field and in the interim, she went about her love of gemstones: mining them, collecting them, tumbling some stones while keeping other in their raw state (her favorite), and ultimately creating artistic wearable designs with them. Stephanie had been in the branding and design sphere so long, but she wasn’t getting much time to actually perform the creative work herself anymore. Now, she was able to design unique wearable art out of the stones she loved so much and share them with friends.

 

Fast-forward a few months and Stephanie is being commissioned to create one of a kind gifts for the bridesmaids in an upcoming wedding her best friend was the maid-of-honor in. The bride was more like a sister to her than anything else so she wanted the gifts to be unique, special, and handmade. Stephanie already had a necklace featuring the brides favorite stone in the works as a wedding gift, and, after a little best-friend-brainstorming, the decision was made to create unique bracelets for each member of the bridesmaid party. Sterling silver was used as this was the brides preferred choice of precious metal, and amethyst was chosen for the stones as it would work well with the chosen wedding colors.

 

This whole experience lit a fire in Stephanie. She was realizing that creating unique, one of a kind jewelry pieces from raw and polished gemstones was more of a passion for her than she realized. She started to wonder if maybe there were other people out there that would love gemstones jus as much as her, and could appreciate the avant-garde, modern, geometric designs she was creating. After a lot of encouragement from friends and family, Idle Fancies was born.
